Some say Shoreditch has had its day, we say – there’s nowhere better to work in the whole of London! Here’s how to spend the ultimate day here. You’re welcome.
Bill Shakespeare lived here. Now it’s home to hipsters, hen parties, holes-in-the-wall, all night speakeasies and the slick, smart and monied crew. Oh, and Noel Fielding lives here. One must never forget about Noel.
We’re a decade on from its early-noughties heyday but Shoreditch is and remains a place of creativity, community and supremely brilliant cocktails. Your boss has convinced you that it’s a great place to work. Our office fit out blog is here to help you plan the apres-ski.
Coffee, Croissants and Quinoa
There are plenty of places to grab breakfast in Shoreditch, starting with Andina. Serving spiced-up Virgin Marys (tomato, celery, black pepper red vegetables, chilli-infused pisco and tiger’s milk) alongside sweet potato pancakes and blueberry chia pudding, it’s the perfect place for making a healthy and wholesome start to your day.
For caffeine addicts, where else would you go but Shoreditch Grind? A bit of a Shoreditch landmark, the Grind has been serving up coffee, sex and rock ‘n’ roll since 2011 – there’s an international-grade recording studio on the top floor. For something a little more traditional, The Book Club does a mean porridge, eggs and Full English.
Where to Eat Lunch
Now, where will you eat lunch? At the rustic Leila’s on the red-bricked streets of Calvert Avenue where the artsy tribe come for low-intervention, home-cooked English scrumminess? At Monty’s Deli for Jewish classics 2.0 – think salt beef, pastrami on rye and chicken soup with kneidlach? A classic pub lunch at the William Blake? Mien Tay for easy-on-the-wallet Vietnamese? The street-food vans of Hoxton Street? With so many choices, you can see why this is such a great place to work!
If it’s posh you’re after, Shoreditch has that too. The much-more-affordable lunchtime menu is the perfect opportunity to sample what Michelin-starred Lyle’s</a and The Clove Club have to offer, and eating here will seriously impress your clients (or your boss).
Mid-Afternoon Skive Power Break
Shoreditch is small and quirky enough to discover on foot. So grab your flats, take a Street Art Tour and look out for the Banksy works on Rivington Street. Other artists are also available.
The area around the Old Truman Brewery throws up a bunch of afternoon distractions from galleries you can just wander into to food halls and vintage markets selling everything from 1920’s jewellery to men’s cut throat razors. Yikes. Boxpark, a buzzy shopping area made from shipping containers is great for new-name popups and affordable original art. Sniff out the Nutella cronuts and tell us you’re not hungry. You know you want one.
If it’s raining (seriously, when it is NOT raining), grab some indoor ping pong at Bounce or be healthy and rebound at Frame. We could also talk about Flight Club but….you know the first rule.
Into the Small Hours
You’ll need to relax after a hard day’s work, so head over to an authentic East End boozer for a reassuringly expensive pint. The Owl and the Pussycat and Bricklayers Arms reign supreme for skittles and shove ha’penny. For exposed brick and industrial bling (and a decent craft beer), try Brewdog.
Hungry? You might be lucky to get a table at the Tramshed. Damien Hurst’s infamous cock-and-bull art installation – a.k.a cow in formaldehyde – dominates the eating area. Of course, there are hundreds more eating options but, you know. Space.
Still not tired? Prohibition-style speakeasy, Nightjar dishes up live swing and jazz and cult-favourite cocktails. If you fancy yourself as Bugsy Malone then this is the place for you. We prefer more sunrise with our cocktails and that’s why we drink Joyeux Bordel, which stays open until 4am. Come here, and you’ll get all the cool scene and brilliant inventions a cocktail connoisseur could hope for.
The Comedy Café Theatre dishes up new breed comedy as well as sets from some of the biggest names in the game. Or. for some R&R, tiptoe to the teeny-weeny 50-seat Electric Cinema on Redchurch Street. Grab a drink in the bar, then settle back and enjoy your film with a cashmere blanket and a glass of wine in hand. Bliss!
